The Vancouver Special Suite Renovation with Formica

If you live in Vancouver, you are likely familiar with the homes that locals call “The Vancouver Special.” Built between 1965 and 1985, these homes popped up in great quantities to serve the masses immigrating from Europe and South Asia. They are 2-storey, brick and stucco finished boxy houses that contain shallow balconies on the second floor. If gone un-renovated, the interiors and exteriors alike are dated, and in need of a refresh.

When Phyllis Lui of Kalu Interiors took on renovating a Vancouver Special, she wanted to give the space a modern, urban feel and bring it into the 21st century. The lower level was to be converted to a suite (because who doesn’t need a mortgage helper in this city?) and for this space, durability and style were of top priorities!

DESIGN TIP: Having end panels on either side of the fridge hides the side and gives an elevated feel to the space.

In the suite kitchen, Formica’s Folkstone 927 - 58 (matte finish) laminate was selected for the top cupboards. Split finishes were used to give the small space interest and the wooden texture of Formica’s Aged Ash 8844 - WR (woodbrush) on the lower cupboards adds an extra element of warmth. The matte black fixtures and hardware were chosen to give the kitchen a modern, urban feel, and compliment the matte grey tones of the cupboards well.

In the suite bathroom, use of Formica’s Aged Ash 8844 - WR (woodbrush) laminate gives the look and feel of wood without the maintenance and hassle. With a selection of otherwise plain and neutral finishes, the wood warms the space and gives it an inviting feel.
